“Chains” Clay and found jewelry H:27.9 cm x W:5.1 cm
In “Chains” I explored how the prominence of materialism among cultures disrupts the tranquility of the mind and creates internalized pressures. The jewelry hanging from the screaming clay mask highlights the detrimental effects of materialism on our emotions. My inspiration for this artwork was Johnson Tsang because he mixes media to convey an alternate version of reality and incorporates elements of surrealist imagination.
“Elevate the Beauty” Digital photography H:40.64 cm x W:50.8 cm
“Elevate the Beauty of Your Skin” explores the effects of body dysmorphia, a mental illness that causes people to frequently examine their appearance. For my artwork, I captured an image of a woman, who has body dysmorphia, with a doctor’s glove pulling all the sides of her face to show how she felt compelled to have cosmetic surgery. I layered the images to illustrate how when people have surgery they feel as if they are leaving behind their pure form for a new version of themselves.
“Restless” Plexiglass, acrylics, and isopropyl alcohol H:45.7 cm in x W:60.9 cm A large misconception of mental health illnesses is that they do not influence physical health. However, mental health disorders can be just as damaging to our bodies as they are to our minds. I depicted the female anatomy on a transparent surface so I could paint visceral images and use bright colors to show the inner workings of the female body in a reaction to the discomforting mental illness she is suffering from.
